Where was “One Nation” coverage?
THE BOSTON Globe failed to cover the recent October 2 "One Nation Working Together Rally for Jobs, Education and Justice" in Washington, D.C. I wrote a letter to the Globe in protest, but I don't think they are going to print the letter (it has been a week since I sent it). Here it is:
Dear Boston Globe,
I am writing to protest your decision to erase the "One Nation Working Together" rally from media coverage.
On October 2nd, the NAACP and the AFL-CIO sponsored a massive rally for social justice in jobs, education, and other progressive causes. About 100,000 people from hundreds of organizations rallied for justice in Washington, D.C.
This was a massive event, and your lack of coverage points to a media bias against activism for a more just society. While you covered Glenn Beck's August "Restoring Honor" Tea Party rally, you neglected the "One Nation Working Together Rally," which just as many people, if not more, attended.
I question why you are reporting on extreme right organizations and are ignoring strong, progressive rallies for change.
In the past, you have also neglected other rallies for social justice, such as comprehensive reporting on the March 2010 immigrant rights march.
The "One Nation Working Together Rally" was a seminal moment, and represents the will of the people for just change and a challenge to the hateful platform of the Tea Party.
In the future, the Boston Globe should cover rallies for justice and let readers know that the people of the U.S. are working for just change in jobs, labor, education and for the dignity and rights of all people in our society. In this time of economic crisis, anger and despair, your readers deserve the hope that emanates from such massive protests.
They deserve the knowledge that people are working for a better future, and that they can join movements to work for positive change.
